ABOUT ACEROLA

Frequent questions about acerola

Can acerola juice mix with other kind of fruit juice?

Acerola is a super product often used to combine with other tropical fruit juices to replenish vitamin C and enhance the flavor of drinks. In addition, with packed antioxidants, acerola also has the ability to prevent the color and flavor changing of the juice due to oxidation process, thereby extending the shelf life of the product.

In terms of flavors harmonization, acerola can go well with kiwi berry, pomelo, dragon fruit, and other berries species. Besides, acerola can be blended with other kinds of fruit juice which are highly oxidized such as apple juice, pear juice to maintain the flavor and taste of the juice.

How do you take acerola?

You can consume fresh acerola fruit as other normal fruit for its health benefits. Its taste tends to be described as sweet, fragrant, and astringent. It’s easily eaten raw or cooked into dishes also.

However, fresh acerola fruit is quite delicate, can be easily spoiled and damaged after a short period of time, so people find the way to preserve and turn it into different processed forms. Common processed forms are IQF (Individual quick freezing) acerola, acerola concentrate, acerola puree, acerola powder. Depending on the application, purpose, and industry, people will use suitable processed form to make final products which enable consumer to easily consume such as RTD juice, functional drink, jam, confectionary products, yogurt, capsule tablets,… The shelf life of these processed products can be up to 36 months if it is produced by a reliable manufacturer having qualified facilities, technology, experience and understanding about the fruit and production. In Nichirei Foods, we have done acerola business for 40 years and we are confident to be an expert in this industry.

Is there any side affect if we absorb a high amount of acerola juice/fruit?

There is not a detail research on the side affect of acerola by now, but since the fruit is extremely rich in Vitamin C, it can be possible to have some small side effect if we take acerola too much. The possible side affect could be digestive disturbances, flushed appearance, frequent urination, headache, nausea, vomiting. Very high amounts of acerola cherry over a long period of time may cause kidney stones.

These symptoms tend not to need medical attention, and they’re relatively uncommon or rare. Simply lower your dosage, and they’ll likely go away. Contact your doctor if you have concerns.

In conclusion, don’t take large doses of any vitamin C product, and gradually decrease the amount if you are already taking large doses. Rebound scurvy can happen when the body has become accustomed to a larger dosage.
